postheadericon How Often Should I Meditate?

When someone first begins to meditate a common question is how regularly they should be doing it. Well, at first, I would recommend meditating once a day at a set time.

When I first starting meditating I did so every night just before my usual bedtime. This provided me with ideal conditions as the house was quiet and it meant that after I had meditated and I felt very relaxed and peaceful I could then go to sleep. I found that after meditating my sleep was much deeper and more fulfilling, plus it had the side benefit of helping me to remember my dreams better. So if you are new to meditating it can be a good idea to mediate once a day just before you go to bed.

Of course, with meditating, there are no hard and fast rules however I always make sure to meditate at least once a day. This helps to keep my ability sharp.

When you become more experienced and learn new meditative exercises you may expand your practice to two, three or even more times a day. The choice is yours, go with what feels right.

  • For those who have a tough time with meditation (it takes lots of practice), I recommend the insight and focus CDs by the Imramma Institute. I use them everyday and the benefits are truly amazing

  • I wonder… is some peaceful music going to help meditating or is it better to do it when there’s complete silence? Either way, it’s probably a great way of finding your balance and I would like to try it, maybe those CDs mentioned by Dave above could help?

  • I meditate about once a week, I find if I meditate in the middle of the week like Wednesday or Thursday it charges me up for the rest of the week. Some people meditate more, some a lot less, but I find once a week is great for me.

  • I have used a meditation technique called the 90 second reset, which you can do 20 times a day if you like! When you’re feeling stressed, sit down, set your cell phone alarm to 90 seconds, close your eyes and simply see black! Just see the back of your eyelids. As soon as the alarm goes off, get up and go back to work! It recharges you and give you the mental strength that you need!

The key is to start slow. Meditation requires time and practice. When I began, I meditated once a week; now I cannot go to sleep before getting my 15-min daily dosage.
